Partnerships are a key point of emphasis for Aurora Public Schools. In fact, Superintendent John L. Barry is proud to say that APS needs community support to help students succeed.

In the spirit of teamwork, all hands were on deck recently at Laredo Elementary School for the sixth annual Children’s Hospital Colorado landscaping project. More than 60 volunteers met at Laredo to give the school a landscape makeover, a new fence and new playground equipment. 

Laredo principal Quinn O’Keefe was appreciative of everyone’s time and energy to make the project possible.

“The nice thing about this is that it finally lets us have something outside that matches what’s happening on the inside,” O’Keefe said. “It’s nice to know that our parents can drive by now and feel proud of how the front of the building looks.”

This is not the first time that Children’s Colorado staff has donated their time to improve APS. Last year, South Middle School’s exterior was transformed thanks to Children’s Colorado volunteers and sponsors from throughout the metro area. The tradition continues this year with more landscaping and facility helpers and more sponsors.

A special thanks to APS Maintenance and Operations supervisor Tim Stanford, who is instrumental each year in organizing and coordinating this project. In addition, Pickens Technical College staff member Bill Cary provided insight for some of the landscaping ideas.
