ACHS Unified Basketball Team Wins State Championship!

photo2-- CopyCongratulations to Aurora Central High School’s unified basketball team, suitably named Aurora Central Gold, who recently closed out their debut season as state champions! In addition, the school’s bronze-level team took second place at state. Go, Trojans!

The teams, comprised of students with and without disabilities, trained under coaches Matt Clark, Terri Clark and Sean Hunt. For many of the students, this was the first sports team they have ever played on.

Please help us applaud the following student-athletes for a job well done:

  • Marco Bencomo
  • DeShawn Calton
  • Tre'lin Calton
  • Samuel Cepeda
  • Michelle Figueroa
  • Shiquon Johnson
  • Jesús Madera
  • Ashlee Orozco
  • Luis Rodriguez
  • Portirio Saucedo
  • Kevin Torres
  • Mario Uribe
  • Adrian Valdez
  • Augustin Valdez

The pairing of students in inclusion and special needs programs with general education students fostered long-lasting friendships and a deeper sense of pride students have in themselves and their school.

To add to an already-amazing inaugural season, Aurora Central's unified team also had an exciting opportunity to face off against Vista PEAK Preparatory at the Pepsi Center before a Denver Nuggets game!

Aurora Public Schools thanks everyone who has helped these young men and women establish their teams and cheered them on throughout the season. This exemplifies the APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan core belief that every student has unique abilities that we must recognize and engage.
