Step Into Leadership Program at Hinkley H.S.

Mizel MuseumThree-thousand middle and high school students and their teachers from across the metro area are invited to attend The Power of Civic Engagement: Step Into Leadership at Hinkley High School on January 31.  Presented by the Mizel Museum, the program will feature spoken word artist Adrian Molina as facilitator, contextualizing and instilling reverence for inspiring speakers, Carlotta Walls LaNier of the Little Rock Nine, and long-time human rights activists Helen Giron and Sheldon Steinhauser.

Through stories and music, the program, now in its second year, is designed to empower youth to engage in public dialogue. There will be live performance, video, student involvement and time for Q & A with the audience.

We’re delighted to be able to offer scholarship and help with transportation through our SCFD funding.  Call Deanne Kapnik at the Mizel Museum, 303 749-5019 for more information, or go to www.mizelmuseum.org.

  • DATES/TIMES:   Tuesday, January 31, 10:00 am and repeated at Noon
  • LOCATION:  Hinkley High School, 1250 Chambers Ave. Aurora CO
  • COST:  $5/student; scholarships and transportation assistance available

The program is being presented in its entirety four times, to accommodate a large number of students.  Each time it’s presented, the program will start on time and will last 75 minutes.

A pre-program workshop for teachers led by Facing History and Ourselves will be held Wednesday, January 18, 4:30 to 7:30 pm at the Mizel Museum, 400 S. Kearney Street, Denver. Heather Frazier will explore possibilities for engaging students in Civil Rights history; teachers will leave with new energy, ideas, and resources to help them deepen the impact of the program for their students.  Register online at www.mizelmuseum.org/teacherworkshop.
