Twelve Aurora Public Schools students are on cloud nine after finding out that they had earned a Boettcher, Daniel’s Fund or Gates Millennium scholarship.

The Daniels Fund selects high school seniors who have demonstrated strong character and a determination to succeed in life. The scholarship covers all required tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies and a variety of other miscellaneous expenses.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship recognizes students with outstanding academic performance. It covers unmet financial need to attend any college or university. Aurora Central‘s Diego Aguilar Lupian and Rangeview’s Feyone La earned this award.

Aurora Central senior Kushmakar Baral is a Daniels Fund and Gates scholar, a feat not often accomplished. He plans to study biomedical engineering at University of Colorado at Boulder.

Hinkley student Scarlett Jimenez earned the Boettcher Scholarship, a "full-ride” merit-based financial award to attend any college or university in Colorado. More than 1,300 students apply each year. She is one of 40 statewide to receive the scholarship.

The Aurora Public Schools Education Foundation awards five $4,000 scholarships to one student at each APS high school. The scholarship is funded by the “Paving the Way to Success” campaign.

The APS community members purchase engraved bricks and glass wall panels at the Professional Learning and Conference Center to raise funds for the scholarships.

Congratulations to Jacqueline Navarez of Hinkley, Taylor Botte of William Smith, Trevor Hancock of Rangeview, Michelle McCandlish of Gateway, and Erna Lukac of Aurora Central!

Barry also presented the PaceSetter Award to Kevin Hougen, President/CEO of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. The PaceSetter award honors community members for their outstanding support of Aurora Public Schools.

Superintendent Annual Award Winners 2013

Sophomores Adrianna Montiel, Katherine Khuu, Helina Zemede, and Mahered Seymour represented Hinkley with advanced critical thinking and determination.  At the award ceremony, the state coordinator Kendra Black highlighted their academic excellence to an audience of thousands.

Seymour earned fifth place for her original piece entitled The 19th Amendment for American Democracy, which she presented as a website. "She was poised, articulate, and most importantly, persuasive," said Hinkley history teacher Colette Elliott.

Aurora Public Schools high school seniors are raking in many scholarships and other financial awards to assist with paying for college. Here are some of the highlights of the class of 2013 scholarship recipients:

• Hinkley High School senior Scarlett Jimenez  earned a 2013 Boettcher Foundation Scholarship, a "full-ride” merit-based financial award to attend any college or university in Colorado. More than 1,300 students apply each year. She is one of 40 statewide to receive the scholarship. Jimenez, who attended Elkhart Elementary School and East Middle School, is currently Hinkley's Student Council and National Honor Society President. Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a degree in political science at the University of Denver.

  Four Aurora Public Schools students are recipients of the Comcast Foundation’s 2013-14 Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Michael Brungardt of Hinkley High School, Jonathan Delgado of Aurora Central High School, T'Hani Holt of William Smith High School, and Jasmine Koch of Rangeview High School. These students will receive their scholarship awards this summer as they prepare to begin college in the fall. The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, are catalysts for positive change in their communities, are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.

• The Better Business Bureau recognized Hinkley High School senior Thong Phung for his outstanding character and high ethical standards, awarding him a $10,000 Student of Integrity Scholarship. The annual scholarship program recognizes and promotes ethics and integrity among young people. The BBB awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors who personify all of the best aspects of high character in their personal choices and actions.

• Pickens Technical College students Joy Davidson and Roger Gresens each earned a $2,500 scholarship through the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, which partnered with Scholarship America to offer financial awards to students who are enrolled in a skilled trade program at a two-year college, vocational school or approved training institute. In addition, Davidson and Gresens were invited to appear alongside Mike Rowe

Hinkley High School's "Team #2" Earns Third Place at the 2013 Calculus Bowl

Students from Hinkley, Gateway and Aurora Central high schools recently competed in the mathematically challenging Calculus Bowl. The Bowl consists of more than 350 challenging calculus questions presented in quiz-show style. Questions are taken from or patterned after AP Calculus exams and range in difficulty from easy to thought-stumpingly difficult.

Out of the nearly 40 metro area teams that competed in the Calculus Bowl, one of Hinkley's five teams made it to the final round and placed 3rd overall. One of Gateway two teams earned an honorable mention with a 5th place finish.

Hundreds of staff, parents and community members enjoyed a first-hand look at APS Academic and Career Pathways at a recent celebration. Student demonstrations including spine palpation, bioloid robots and aerospace engineering highlighted the annual "Pathways to Results" event.

Visual demonstrations from each pathway – plus other learning related to business/community/workforce partners – gave students the opportunity to showcase what they are learning in the classroom.

"One of the coolest things I have done in science was when we learned about electricity... we connected the wire with the battery to make a circuit to turn on the light bulb," said Park Lane Elementary School student Simon Sanchez. "We were also pharmacists for a day. We got to wear lab coats and make lotion at University of Colorado!" 

There are four Academic and Career Pathways in Aurora Public Schools:

• Business
• Health Sciences
• Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

"With the APS pathways program, students are provided a map and they become aware of the potential that they posses," said Aurora Central High School student Vadessa Camack. "They use these tools to not only dream, but they use them to actually reach the destinations they have set to reach on the path that they chosen."
