"We choose students to target for intervention based on proficiency levels determined by Acuity testing data," said North principal Gerardo De La Garza. "In doing so, the students have shown tremendous growth in reading comprehension, science and numeracy, and fundamental math understanding. We have seen students gain confidence and transfer understanding to other content areas. This has been a beneficial program in helping to close the achievement gap for our students."

North Middle School Health Sciences & Technology Campus

Twelve students from the Aurora LIGHTS pathway at North Middle School Health Sciences & Technology Campus recently shadowed a Colorado state legislator at the Colorado Association of Gifted and Talented Legislative Day at the Colorado State Capitol. 

The Legislative Day’s activities included attending general session meetings of the Colorado State House of Representatives or the Colorado State Senate, as well as sitting in on committees with their assigned legislator, culminating in a question and answer forum with many legislators.  The students wrote essays to the legislators on various issues ranging from immigration reform to gun control.

North Middle School

Recently, students from Columbia Middle School, North Middle School Health Sciences and Technology Campus and Hinkley High School students  participated in The Greater Denver Metro Region’s National History Day competition held at Legacy High School in Parker. 

For this annual competition, students work as individuals or in groups to create exhibits, websites, documentaries or  write research papers on the this year’s National History Day theme, “Turning Points in History.”  Students submitted entries on a wide variety of topics ranging from African-American Cowboys in the West to the Hubble Telescope. 

The winners advance to the state competition, which will be held May 4 at the University of Colorado Denver on the Auraria campus.  From state, students can advance to represent Colorado at the national contest, held annually at the University of Maryland,  College Park,  in June.

  Hinkley High School National History Day participants

The nationwide program honors young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism. The awards program, now in its 18^th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

The 13-year-old seventh-grader has been an avid volunteer at her school and at a local mental health facility for the past two years. Martinez was inspired to get involved after seeing the Red Cross spring into action to help people during times of crisis.

"My favorite thing is to do volunteer hours," Martinez said. "People really need your time."

She started by helping kindergartners and first graders with their homework on a regular basis. Martinez then made herself available to school officials to help with events such as back-to-school nights, parent coffees and parent-teacher conferences. She says volunteering will always be a part of her life.

As a state honoree, Martinez will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C. for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, ten state honorees will be named America’s top youth volunteers for 2013.

“Prudential is proud to honor these students for making meaningful contributions to their communities,” said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. “We hope that shining a spotlight on their initiative, creativity and compassion inspires others to consider how they, too, can make a difference.”

Aurora Public Schools will host two community resource fairs and celebrations for parents and students.  The events will feature student performances and refreshments.

In addition, because the holiday season may create stress for families and students, several community groups will be present with support on topics including housing needs, strategies for handling holiday stress and personal safety and security.

No Place for Hate was developed to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony among diverse groups. The campaign empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry.

Orton-Keiffer was recognized during a recent rotary club meeting. Joined by his family and North administrators, Orton-Keiffer addressed the audience about his achievement and what it took for him to get this far.

North received a $100 award on Orton-Keiffer’s behalf to be used by the student council or another club or organization at the school.

Students receive a certificate and gifts donated by the community.  Students are selected by their principals and teachers for being overall first-rate students and excellent members of the school community.
