Fourth-grader Dianne Cruz Medel submitted the winning Arbor Day Poster Contest entry to the COMPASS after-school program, sponsored by the City of Aurora. 

As part of the celebration, the City of Aurora presented Vaughn with a special plaque recognizing their efforts to participate in this year's Arbor Day festivities. City Forester John Wesolowski also made remarks about Arbor Day and Tree City USA,  a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America.

A Missoula Children's Theatre staff member goes over a few lines with students during the open auditions.

The Missoula Children's Theatre and Vaughn Elementary School teamed up recently to present the musical production of "Jack and the Beanstalk."

MCT is the nation's largest children's touring theatre and has been touring nation wide for the past 40 years. The company brought out all the stops at Vaughn, beginning with auditions earlier this week. Students from all grades lined the school gymnasium to show off their acting skills to the MCT staff. 

Vaughn students were excited for the opportunity to showcase their acting skills and most added a little bravado to their lines. 

"Jack and the Beanstalk" will go live Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. and April 13 at 2 p.m.

Students throughout Aurora Public Schools are staying warm this winter thanks to a coat drive organized by APS Director of Security Tudy Wicks and members of the Aurora Police Department.

APD School Resource Officers Sgt. Damon Vaz and Sgt. Stacy Talbert recently delivered nearly 75 coats to Boston for their Cops, Coats & Kids coat drive, bringing smiles to students’ faces as well as reassurance that they will stay warm on cold days. Having plenty to choose from, students were able to select the color, size and design of their new coats.

Wicks and APD have since continued the coat drive at the following schools:

For many people, a Christmas tree in their home is what represents the Christmas season.

For the second consecutive year, Shield M Ranch Christmas Tree Farm has donated their remaining Christmas trees to Aurora families. Shield M Ranch is a family owned Ranch that has been providing Colorado raised Christmas Trees for families for over 80 years. Every year they have trees left over and they wanted to make sure that families who needed them could get access to them. Each year there have been nearly 50 trees ranging in sizes that needed homes.

Thanks to the time and effort of many APS family liaisons and volunteers, the trees have been brought down from the mountains to our community. The amazing family liaisons worked with their schools and families to get trees to the families who really needed them. This year a special thanks goes out to Minnie Pescador and her volunteers, including Carmen Cavazos and Rose and Justin Norton for taking a Sunday to drive to the mountains and bring the tress down so our families could have access. We are excited to continue this partnership for many years to come.

You’re Invited to APS Community Resource Fairs!

Aurora Public Schools will host two community resource fairs and celebrations for parents and students.  The events will feature student performances and refreshments.

In addition, because the holiday season may create stress for families and students, several community groups will be present with support on topics including housing needs, strategies for handling holiday stress and personal safety and security.

Please join us for these celebrations and to access resources to support student and family success.

Mayor Steve Hogan spoke at the special tree planting ceremony at Vaughn Elementary School, in celebration of Poleth’s winning poster. Poleth was also recognized at a recent City Council meeting and given a t-shirt with her poster design printed on it.

Students receive a certificate and gifts donated by the community.  Students are selected by their principals and teachers for being overall first-rate students and excellent members of the school community.
