APS Sets Open Houses on Attendance Area Options

Enrollment changes at elementary schools north of Alameda Ave. have led to capacity issues at many of these schools. Some of the schools are below enrollment capacity while others are overcrowded.  Bond funds approved by voters in 2002 are being used to improve existing schools and build new ones.  With these funds, APS has expanded the school site at 875 Peoria St. and is rebuilding and expanding Paris Elementary School. These improvements will help to alleviate some overcrowding in the area, but attendance area changes are still needed.

A committee that includes district representatives, parents and community members has developed attendance area options to present to the public. Community members are invited to attend any of the open houses listed below to view maps and displays of the attendance area options and provide input.

Open house dates and locations are:

Tuesday, Nov. 29
Elkhart Elementary School
1020 Eagle St.
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 30
Montview Elementary School
2055 Moline St.
6:30-8:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 7
Temporary Paris Elementary School
875 Peoria St.
6:30-8:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 8
Sixth Avenue Elementary School
560 Vaughn St.
6:30-8:30 p.m.

After collecting public feedback, the committee will make attendance area recommendations to the APS Board of Education in January 2006.  If the board approves the recommendations, new attendance areas would go into effect in the fall of 2006.
