WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ADD TO PEACE TAPESTRY

Student poets from West Middle School have created a quilt panel as part of the “Tapestry for Peace” project, sponsored by the Denver chapter of the National League of American Pen Women. The students will present their panel to the Pen Women at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14 in the West media center.

During the last month, students have written poems about peace. Inspired by a line from their poems, students embroidered symbols of peace onto a panel of Irish linen. Their panel will be added to other quilt panels completed by Pen Women around the nation. Children from a village in Zambia are also creating a panel.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to see how their poems can have an impact on others,” said Elaine Omann, West AGATE teacher. “The Pen Women have been very impressed with the talent and creativity that our student poets have brought to this project.”

When the tapestry is complete, peace expressions from around the world will be added to the border. The tapestry unveiling ceremony is schedule for April 21, 2006 in Denver.
