APS Students to Meet with Famed Artist

Nationally-known Chicano artist, Simon Silva, travels the country to discuss his experiences growing up as a migrant youth, his art, and how education played a key role in his success. Silva will share his inspiration with APS middle and high school students during the week of April 3-7.

“We’re thrilled that our students will have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Silva,” said Jesús Escárcega, Diversity Education coordinator. “He uses his talents and cultural background to motivate students to succeed.”

Silva is scheduled to speak at the following APS schools:
West Middle School, 10100 E. 13 th Ave. Monday, April 3, 2:30-4 p.m.
South Middle School, 12310 Parkview Dr. Wednesday, April 5, 1-2 p.m., 2:20-4 p.m.
Aurora Central High School, 11700 E. 11 th Ave. Thursday, April 6, 1-2 p.m., 6-9 p.m.

Silva will also meet with APS students enrolled in the after-school art program at the Downtown Aurora Visual Arts Center, 1419 Florence St., on April 6 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

In addition to the student presentations, Silva has donated prints of his artwork to the GEAR UP Parent Advisory Group for their auction to raise college scholarship funds for disadvantaged students. GEAR UP is a discretionary grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

Simon Silva’s paintings depict stylized portraits of farm workers, a life he personally experienced as a migrant worker from the age of 8. Silva is also author of the book, Small-Town Browny, a collection of autobiographical short stories of his childhood. More information on the artist can be accessed at www.simonsilva.com.

Silva’s presentation tour is being organized by Aurora Public Schools’ Diversity Education department, GEAR UP, the Colorado Department of Education-Migrant Education Office, and Colorado Region II Migrant Education Office.
