Students Celebrate World Peace Day with Pinwheels

To celebrate International World Peace Day on September 21, students at Vassar, Kenton, Tollgate and Sable elementary schools will create and decorate their own "Pinwheels for Peace." Students will "plant" their pinwheels with messages of peace on the front lawn of the schools to create outdoor art sculptures.

"When I talked to my students about World Peace Day, they could all tell me what war was, but very few could describe the abstract idea of peace," said Vassar art teacher Thad McCauley. "We hope that this project will enable to express their ideas of peace in a creatively visual way," said Sable art teacher Diana Goodreau. "In addition to the pinwheels, each student will also be writing a 'piece on peace.'" Goodreau added.

Kenton art teacher Laurie Foster added that students will create pinwheels of all shapes and sizes. "As part of the creation process," said Foster, "we will be talking about peace and what it is that we can do to make our home, school and world more peaceful." The students will then write their thoughts about peace on one side of each pinwheel. On the other side, they will draw, paint, and create collages to visually express their feelings.

The students will assemble these pinwheels, and on International Day of Peace they will "plant" their pinwheels in front of the schools as public art installations. Vassar, Kenton, Tollgate and Sable Elementary students will install their pinwheels between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and keep them on display until at least 4 p.m.

Pinwheels for Peace was started by two Florida art teachers as a way for students to express their feelings about what's going on in the world and in their lives. Pinwheels for Peace has grown to become an international art installation project, with many schools in Colorado, the United States and around the world participating.
