Superintendent Kicks Off School Year on Aug. 15 With Challenge:
Aurora Public Schools Invites Community to "Share the View"

Superintendent John L. Barry kicked off the school year not only by visiting schools, but by issuing challenges to all Aurora community members.

“We need to make some changes in our district and increase student achievement,” said Barry. “I can’t do this alone—teachers and students can’t do this alone.  On Tuesday I am going to ask all key members of the community—from our board to the union to parents to elected officials—to be part of the solution.”

Barry will start the day, Tuesday, Aug. 15 by joining students at Aurora Hills Middle School and Gateway High School on their bus ride to school.  He will also join students for breakfast at the newly-opened Peoria Elementary, a remodeled school funded with bond dollars approved by voters in 2002.

The public is invited to meet with Barry at 9:30 a.m. at the new Paris Elementary, located at 1635 Paris St. He will share the vision for APS with a challenge to the entire community to ensure educational excellence for every student. 

“It is our obligation to ensure that every student achieves their learning potential,” said Barry. “If we are going to be successful, we need to involve the entire community. Everyone has a contribution to make in the lives of our children.”

  • 7,200 APS students ride the bus to school each day. 
  • 53 percent of APS students eat school lunches each day; 13 percent eat breakfast at school each morning.
