After APS schools confirm the need for a volunteer and select someone to take on the responsibilities, the Volunteer (or Partner) must then be referred to complete a background check screening by the Security Office. Background check results are reviewed and when cleared without concern, an ID badge will be issued for the volunteer to wear while visiting an APS school or support site. Note: this would be the same process for a chaperone who will be traveling with students on overnight trips.

The Security office is now processing Volunteers and Partners online only.

How does screening and badging work?

  1. After the school confirms the need for the volunteer, the applicant (volunteer/chaperone/partner) will need to complete an online request, AND will submit their personal information to Sterling Volunteers for the background check process to get started. This will be the required step to request screening and a badge.
  2. School or district staff will ask for and collect 2 document requirements from the applicant: the applicant’s ID and a current picture. These 2 electronic files will then be attached to an online approval form. This will be the required step to approve a volunteer or partner.

TO REQUEST A BADGE AND START THE BACKGROUND PROCESS:

VOLUNTEER OR PARTNER MUST DO THIS PART

  1. Complete the online Volunteer/Partner Screening and Badge Request Form to start the process. Filling out this form is required every year.
  2. Create an account and request a background check directly from the Sterling Volunteers website. Screening is required every year.

NOTE: After completing the request form, the confirmation will show you a link to the Sterling Volunteers website. Follow that link and you will have to log in using your established login credentials for that platform to request the background check. The Security Office is not able to help with password/login issues.

The "good deed code" to use in order for Aurora Public Schools to pay the background check fee is: aps301v - You must use that code to ensure we pay and receive the results. Screening is required every year.

IMPORTANT: Please know that nothing happens for any applicant until an approval is submitted.

TO APPROVE A VOLUNTEER OR PARTNER TO RECEIVE A BADGE:

SCHOOL STAFF MUST DO THIS PART

  1. School staff or approvers at the district level will obtain an electronic copy of the applicant’s picture ID and a current picture of the applicant. No pictures of pictures are allowed, no pictures with filters are allowed, and we will not accept the picture on the ID either.
  2.  The staff member will also need to complete the electronic Volunteer/Partner Approval Form, and on the form attach the ID and picture files of the volunteer/partner they are approving.

IMPORTANT: Please know that nothing happens for any applicant until an approval is submitted.

The Security Office needs to receive and confirm that all steps above have been completed before approving and releasing a Volunteer/Partner badge. Once printed, the badge will be sent via interschool mail to the APS site where the Volunteer or Partner will be helping (no exceptions).
