William Smith High School, Expeditionary Development
On a recent typical school day in November, William Smith High School hosted a group of students from West Generation Academy, a newly opened school on the Denver West campus. However, not much else is typical about either of these schools, as William Smith is an expeditionary learning school and West Generation is a member of Generation Schools. Students from West Generation visited William Smith to take initiative over their own learning, examine ways of achieving student engagement and to learn more about how to develop a positive school culture.
As the visiting students observed classrooms, spoke with William Smith students and learned more about the school, they were impressed by the school community’s authentic engagement with and interest in learning. Ultimately, West Generation students gained insight into how they can work towards cultivating their own school environment to reflect a place in which they wish to learn.
