The APS Early Childhood Education Department, together with the University of Colorado at Denver, were recently awarded a $199,661 grant, funded by the 2012-13 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and Improving Teacher Quality federal grant as administered by the Colorado Department of Higher Education.
The grant project, called “ECE Enhanced: Early Literacy and Language Development for Young English Language Learners,” includes support for tuition costs, fees, and textbooks. Grant funds provide APS participants with high-quality professional development in the form of three CU Denver courses that support a working knowledge in the areas of literacy and language development; linking assessment to instruction; and effective literacy instruction for young English language learners.
A cohort of 32 APS ECE facilitators and paraprofessionals met recently for their first of three courses. The second course will be offered in fall 2013 and the third course will be offered in spring 2014.
