FULTON Celebrates 60-plus Years in Aurora

FULTON B-day Celebration

FULTON Academy of Excellence has seen its fair share of students come and go over the years — 61 years to be exact.

The school, which opened its doors in 1952, recently celebrated its birthday during a community celebration. FULTON students serenaded the crowd with a few songs, including a rendition of "Happy Birthday," and parents and former staff members and students congregated over cake and laughter.

Adding to the excitement, author and FULTON alum Joyce Duggan Autrey visited classrooms throughout the day reading to children.  She brought copies of her book, "Can I Kayak, Daddy?" along with it's subject, her daughter, Bonny. Autrey presented a copy to the school's library, and signed copies of the book during the community celebration while catching up with old friends.

"It was a wonderful day to share memories with former classmates, family and neighbors," Autrey said. "It's just been nice to do this here at FULTON."

FULTON staff members also created a memories book, a collage of photos and other information, which members of the community and alums were invited to sign. Staff hopes to publish a final volume at the end of the school year.

Happy Birthday, FULTON!
