With help from the City of Aurora and Aurora Public School’s Department of Grants and Federal Programs, Park Lane Elementary School recently received a substantial grant to upgrade their play yard. Through their 2014 School Play Yard Initiative, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) announced on April 10th that Park Lane was selected, out of only eight schools, to receive $100,000 towards the purchase of a brand new playground with nature-themed elements. This includes new surfacing, expanded ADA-approved wheelchair access, and a painted Colorado-themed nature trail around the entire play area. Aurora Public Schools will provide several new trees for shade, plant native Colorado shrubs, install large boulders for an outdoor classroom, and resurface and restripe the entire asphalt area and games. The City of Aurora will also contribute by excavating the old play area and preparing the new play area for installation.
Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. GOCO’s independent board awards competitive grants to local governments and land trusts, and makes investments through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Created when voters approved a Constitutional Amendment in 1992, GOCO has since funded more than 3,500 projects in urban and rural areas in all 64 counties without any tax dollar support. Visit www.goco.org for more information.
This new playground will replace a structure that is over 30 years old. Installation should be complete by 2015, and will be available for all of the students and surrounding community to enjoy. A special thank you goes out to Park Lane’s Student Leadership Team and Principal Mary Duran for all of their dedication to this project.
