Peoria Elementary Unveils New Greenhouse

Peoria Elementary School kicked off the 2017-18 school year by unveiling a shiny new greenhouse that students and staff will use to grow vegetables and plants for their cafeteria and community.

Eleana Sigler, former Peoria elementary staff member, originated the idea and acquired enough grants to fund its construction.

“Construction of the greenhouse started July 20 and finished Aug. 8,” said Peoria custodian Scott Knox, who enjoyed watching the project develop.

“The purpose of the greenhouse is to give students the opportunity to learn how to plant and grow seeds,” said principal Lisa Toner.

The greenhouse’s produce will supply fresh cafeteria food for students and is also set to sell in a farmer’s market once a month.

“We are hoping every grade level will be able to use it to grow plants and veggies,” said Toner. “Fourth and fifth graders will be growing veggies and plants to use in the school cafeteria.”
