Congratulations, felicitaciones and mazal tov to the 15 Aurora Central High School students who recently earned the Colorado Seal of Biliteracy! This honor recognizes students who develop proficiency in standard academic English and any other language, including American Sign Language.
Aurora Central teacher Susan Holloway sponsored legislation that created the seal. She led the Trojans in piloting issuance of the seal in the 2017-18 school year, making Aurora Public Schools one of only four districts in Colorado to offer students this opportunity.
Students Gerrardo Aguilar, Kevin Aldana, Daniel Banuelos, Kevin Bustamonte, Wendy Camacho, Sebastian Corchado-Acosta, Ivonne Rodriguez Garcia, Daisy Jimenez, Jennifer Santos Lopez, Jessica Martinez Verdoza, Liliana Quiriate, Daniel Rea Torres, Leslie Saavedra and Giovanni Valdez now have a tangible way to showcase their multilingual skills and credentials.
"Aurora Central High School is the perfect place to institute the Seal of Biliteracy because of our large international population and our vision and mission statements that encourage global leadership," Holloway said. We knew we already had these kind of scholars in our school; our only work was to confirm who they were."
The seal is noted on students’ diplomas and transcripts to provide colleges and employers an easy way to identify candidates who hone multiple language skills. As detailed in our APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan, every APS student will have a set of skills to implement his or her plan for college and career success.
According to a New American Economy study, demand for bilingual U.S.- and foreign-born workers in Colorado’s biggest industries is growing. In addition, numerous studies prove that learning a second language enhances students’ cognitive development, equips them with greater cultural understanding and encourages active global citizenship.
Bravo to Aurora Central High School for piloting such an amazing program.
