YourHub: Breaking Down Barriers For First Generation College Students

Armonium Tsegaye, a 2018 graduate from Aurora Central High School

Story excerpt:

"Armonium Tsegaye graduated from Aurora Central High School in May and is headed off to college in the fall. He will be the first in his family to work toward a higher education degree, no small feat considering the odds against him. A 2018 National Center for Education Statistics study found that among students whose parents had a college degree, 78 percent enrolled in college immediately after graduation, while only 58 percent of first generation post-secondary students immediately entered college. First generation collegians often face a litany of challenges when it comes to pursuing higher education, including lack of academic preparation, support from family, and financial resources."
