APS Honors Veterans in Aurora & Across the Nation!

In celebration of Veterans Day, Aurora Public Schools is honored to salute all veteran and active military personnel for their sacrifice, bravery and commitment to serve our country. APS is privileged to have many veterans working in our district to help students shape successful futures.

Below are some highlights of APS veterans from four branches of our military:

Dennis Mitcham
Bus Driver, Aurora Public Schools
United States Army – 25 years

“I joined the Army in 1961 and retired as a Master Sergeant. I wanted to serve for the good of the country and benefit it in some way. The kids are our future so they’re my focus. That is why I became a bus driver after retiring from the Army.”

Lenton Thomas
Bus Driver, Aurora Public Schools
United States Marine Corps – Four years

“I served from 1974-1978. I did it to give back to my country and protect it. My favorite thing about working for APS is the kids. They are a lot of fun and I really enjoy giving back to my community.

Tim Ingbretson
Bus Trainer, Aurora Public Schools
United States Navy – Four years

“Serving in the Navy gave me an opportunity to see the world. Italy was my favorite. I really enjoy working with a great team here at APS and helping other bus drivers do their jobs. It is very rewarding.”

Darold Burnett
Bus Driver, Aurora Public Schools
United States Air Force – 21 years

“Joining the Air Force helped with personal growth and becoming a responsible adult. My favorite thing about it was the people I got to meet and the relationships that formed because of it. It is the same reason I love working for APS – the people make it so worthwhile.”
