Dozens of high school-age elves helped make Santa's job a little easier this season. For the 5th consecutive year, students at Gateway High School took local elementary students on an exciting holiday shopping trip at Target called "Shop with an Oly" ("Oly" is short for "Olympian," Gateway's mascot).
This favorite community event challenges the high school students to raise $100 for each elementary student. The elementary students spent $60 on gifts for their family and $40 on themselves. This year, Gateway chose 75 elementary students from seven APS schools to participate in the program. They wore t-shirts that said "Future Oly" on the back because they all come from schools that feed into Gateway.
After shopping, the elementary students wrapped their gifts at Gateway High School, which students and staff had turned into a winter wonderland! The students decorated holiday cookies, played games and even met Santa and Mrs. Claus. At the end of the event, Gateway gave the elementary students and their families a large box of food with a ham, a turkey and all the trimmings for a fantastic holiday meal. This event is a great example of how Gateway fulfills its mission to help students become leaders in their community!
