APS Alumni Creating a “Legacy”

By Yucheng Zhang, APS Communication Intern

In the fall of 2018, a group of Aurora Public School graduates from around the district came together to form the a capella group Legacy. This talented group of artists consists of Vista PEAK graduates Emma Carlson, Asomalu Magele, Jeremiah Richard, and Dominique Smith-Lopez, as well as Gateway graduates Tyler Ker and Tracee Hill, and Hinkley alumni Hodaly Sotelo. Vista PEAK Vocal Director John Richard and his assistant Gi Huh direct the students.

Since banding together, the group has performed with the Storytellers, a professional acapella group in Denver. They have also worked with the Detroit Institute of Music Education’s program DIME and in a number of other small concerts and events around the area.

Recently, the group was invited to participate in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella’s Southwest Quarterfinals where they competed against six other a cappella groups. Legacy took first place with an amazing score of 441 and qualified for the Southwest semifinals in Arizona. In their quarterfinal performance, Tracee Hill earned Outstanding Soloist for the song “River” and Tyler Ker won the Vocal Percussion Award for Legacy’s entire set.

We are very proud of this talented group of APS alumni and wish them luck in their semi-final performances.
