Aurora Central Teacher Earns National STEM Award

Congratulations to Michael Smith, Aurora Central High School science teacher, for being named the High School Teacher of the Year by the National Society of Engineers.

The award recognizes Smith as one of the most esteemed educators in the state for demonstrating excellence in the classroom and the development of materials and programs. Smith has spent the last three years building the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Pathway at Central and has seen amazing results.

“My goal has been to support the needs of the workforce as it relates to STEM and engineering,” said Smith. “Students leave my classroom better equipped for workforce readiness because they learn those higher-level engineering concepts early on in their education.”

His students are especially grateful for the opportunity to learn STEM at Central.

“Mr. Smith’s class really got me excited about engineering and being able to build things,” said Aurora Central student Samantha Jimenez. “He pushes me to be successful and I love it.”

APS applauds Smith for his hard work and dedication. We are honored to have such a phenomenal leader on our team at Central and wish him continued success!
