May is National Mental Health Awareness Month

We all may face challenges in our lives that can impact our mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, can create feelings of anxiousness and uncertainty. It is important for our students, staff, families and community members to be supported in this time of need.

Thankfully, the APS Mental Health and Counseling Department has remained a great source of stability, information and unparalleled support for all.

We are proud to celebrate these unsung heroes throughout the year, but particularly during May, which is National Mental Health Awareness Month. We join districts across the nation to honor the unique and vital role these dedicated mental health professionals play in our students’ and staff members’ lives.

Throughout each school year, our Mental Health and Counseling team works hard to educate the public and advocate for policies that support mental health needs. During the stay-at-home order, our school counselors, social workers, and psychologists have made themselves available to students. Such connections have served as a great reminder to our families that they are not alone.

We are proud to know that our families are receiving high-quality care. Our Mental Health and Counseling team members have earned numerous national and state awards, serve on state boards, and equip APS staff with mental health tools by providing coaching and professional development opportunities.

The team has also adopted mindfulness techniques for students and staff. The APS Sustainable Wellness program teaches breathing lessons, yoga exercises, brain breaks and more to help students and staff navigate life’s challenges. This information is also available to the public! To learn how to be kind to your mind, follow “APS Sustainable Wellness” on Facebook. The page features yoga videos, positive affirmations, informative articles, local resources and more.

Thanks to Aurora voters who approved our 2018 mill levy override, APS welcomed more than 100 additional professionals to our Mental Health and Counseling team. They have made quantifiable advancements in helping our students improve their mental health and increase their resiliency.

Please join us in thanking the entire APS Mental Health and Counseling team for helping remove barriers our students and staff may face in reaching their goals.
