In-Person Learning Begins Jan. 19 for “A” Group and Preschool Students, Jan. 25 for “B” Group

Dear APS Community,

We are pleased to announce that we will be returning to in-person learning. Our first step will be to implement our hybrid model for APS students. As we have shared with you previously, we have strong operational and mitigation plans in place and current health data does not negatively impact our ability to implement our plans. We shared this video earlier this school year and we encourage you to watch it carefully as it outlines many of the mitigation strategies that are in place in all of our schools.

All APS staff will be expected to report to work in person at our schools starting on Monday, Jan. 11. Of course, this excludes staff members with medical exemptions. The week of Jan. 11 will remain a remote learning week for students, so that staff have time to plan and prepare for a return to in-person learning. Students from the “A” group along with all preschool students will begin in-person learning on Jan. 19. “B” group students will begin on Jan. 25. Please see this calendar that indicates the “A” and “B” weeks. As a reminder, preschool students are not divided into two groups and will attend school every week on Mondays-Thursdays. Also, when high school students are learning in-person during their “A” or “B” weeks, they will only attend half days.

You will notice that the calendar only goes through Feb. 12. This is because we intend to make our next decision about changing our learning mode by Feb. 4 if needed. This may mean increasing in-person learning opportunities or transitioning back to remote learning. This will all depend on whether current health data is allowing us to maintain our safety and mitigation plans without significant impacts. If a change in learning mode is made, the transition would start on Feb. 16. As always, we will continue to share information with you as quickly as possible.

For those families that have elected to keep their children at home for fully remote learning, please ask your child’s school if you have specific questions about your child’s remote learning schedule.

Once again, during the weeks that students are not attending school in person in their groups, they will be learning remotely from home. We have developed a Remote Learning Behavioral Code of Conduct and we ask that you review it regularly with your student. Please remember that all synchronous (learning in real-time from teachers online) classes will be recorded. We will use the recorded classes for instructional purposes only and will not share them publicly. For example, the recordings may be provided to other students who were absent during the class or to other teachers for training purposes. 

Keeping Students Safe
While students are at school, we will keep the same group of peers and staff members together for the entire day as much as possible. If any students are showing symptoms, they will be isolated from others immediately and we will ask their parents/guardians to pick them up from school as quickly as possible. We ask all parents and guardians to please keep their emergency contact information updated through Parent Portal. Also, please have a plan for picking up your students from school if school staff contact you.

If your child has been potentially exposed to an individual who has tested positive or is showing symptoms of COVID-19, you will be notified and provided quarantine guidance. Please know that all APS school nurses and administrators have received training and continue to receive updated information and guidance.

Health Reminders
The health and safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority. Please partner with us by adhering to the following practices:

  • All students must wear face masks while on the bus and at school. Please continue to practice mask wearing with your children at home.
  • Keep your children home if they are sick. Check for symptoms every day by completing self assessments and always check your child’s temperature. If your child has a temperature of 100.0 F or higher, keep your child at home. Additional symptoms to look out for are a cough, sore throat, tiredness, nausea, loss of taste or smell and shortness of breath.
  • If someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, please keep your student at home for the quarantine period determined by your medical provider.
  • Reinforce and teach frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Make sure to provide your school with a current telephone number where you can be reached.
  • Ensure that someone is available to pick up your children within an hour if they are showing symptoms.
  • Report your child’s absence each day to the school including the reason for the absence and, if sick, please report illness symptoms on the attendance line. 
  • Also, please remind your children about social distancing. This means keeping several feet between themselves and others. I know some children may want to hug or high five others. Instead, please show your children how to give a friendly wave or thumbs up from a distance instead.

Technology Devices
Every APS student should have a technology device such as a tablet or chromebook. Students will use these devices for learning while they are in-person and remote. It is important that students bring their devices to and from school every day. Also, please keep devices charged as much as possible. If your student does not have a technology device, please work with your child’s school to check out a device.

Free Grab-and-Go Meals 
APS will continue to offer free meals for families. When students are learning in person, students will be provided with meals at school. When students are learning remotely, families can pick up free grab-and-go meals at any drive-thru school location throughout the district. Meal pick up via drive-thru will be available from 10:45-11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday. Most APS high schools (Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley, Rangeview and Vista PEAK Preparatory) will also have an evening pick-up time from 4:15-5 p.m. 

School-Time Remote Learning Childcare
We have partnered with organizations throughout our community to offer school-time childcare during weeks that students will be learning remotely. Our plan is to continue offering care for students at offsite locations (Colorado Community Church, Dayton Opportunity Center, and Salvation Army) and at three City of Aurora Parks and Recreation Centers (Central, Meadowood and Moorhead). Students will be supervised by professional childcare staff while they are at the remote learning centers.

This service will be available Monday through Friday for the weeks that students are scheduled to be learning remotely from home and space is limited. In order to support instruction for remote learning, priority will be given to APS staff members. All parents will be responsible for transportation to and from the sites. 

Please note that there may be a cost for care at the remote learning centers.

Athletics and Activities
APS will continue to follow CHSSA guidance. Practices for Season B sports are currently scheduled to start in January. Clubs and Activities will continue to be provided remotely.

We will continue to share updates with you as quickly as possible. That includes any new information about our return to in-person learning as well as our plan to provide COVID-19 vaccinations for our educators and staff members.
