APS Bilingual School Psychologist Paige Powers recently earned the 2020 Excellence in Service to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations award! This state-wide recognition from the Colorado Bilingual School Mental Health Network and the Colorado Society of School Psychologists honors Powers’ undying dedication to students.
Powers is hailed for her highly-tuned skills in ethically and accurately identifying educational disabilities in Spanish-speaking students. She has been instrumental in training administrators, special education teachers and special service providers in the district’s peer comparison model. She helped implement a new educator academy, an induction program, virtual assessment procedures and more. Powers also advocates for the systemic implementation of racial and ethnic equity in education, especially for students who are learning English as a second language.
Another admirable quality is Powers’ passion to pass the torch. She influences the future of bilingual school psychologists by supervising Spanish-speaking psychology interns and practicum students to guide them in best practices. Thanks to her, our future is bright!
Congratulations to Powers for bringing such value to social emotional learning and advocacy for students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
