Congratulations to Crawford Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher Michael Tanner for earning Book Trust’s 2020-21 Schatz Family Teacher of the Year award! He is the first Colorado teacher to receive this prestigious recognition.
Book Trust is a longstanding, beloved partner of APS that provides teachers and families across the nation with literacy resources. Their monthly deliveries of books, which students personally choose based on their interests, encourage a life-long love for reading. Most importantly, students have the luxury to enjoy their literary selections both at school and in the comfort of their own homes.
Book Trust virtually honored Tanner and granted him $2,500 for going above and beyond to ensure the success of the program in his classroom. Tanner refers to his students as “super-readers” and regularly plans book celebrations as new books arrive.
“We have themes every month,” Tanner shared. “We have dressed up in pajamas, as superheroes and more.”
Book Trust Founder Adrienne Schatz, President Kellie O’Keefe, Crawford Principal Michael Abdale and more joined the virtual conference to congratulate Tanner for exemplifying the program’s mission and being an upstanding model for teachers to follow.
“Book Trust is a great program,” said Abdale. “When partnered with a great educator, we can do amazing things! At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about. I get to watch Mr. Tanner create magic every day for the kids. To see him recognized by such a phenomenal program makes me so proud.”
“I can’t say enough how much I appreciate this honor,” Tanner adds. “Book Trust has given my students so much access and choice for books. Giving kids choice makes them excited about literature. My students and I will continue to celebrate every time we get our book box.”
APS is proud to have a teacher like Tanner on our team who is hailed nationwide for being a “book hero.” We are confident that the impact he has made by sharing the joy of reading with students will last a lifetime.
