Story excerpt:

"Gateway High School struggled to find enough football players to field a team after its head coach resigned two weeks before the start of CHSAA’s spring season.

Which wasn’t a huge surprise at a school that entered the spring with six consecutive losing seasons and just 11 total wins since 2014.

Now, fast forward two months, and an unlikely collection of Aurora Public School underdogs is on the doorstep of making history. No. 6 Gateway (5-3) will face No. 1 Thomas Jefferson (7-0) on Friday night for the Class 4A state championship in Pueblo.

It marks the first time a Gateway boys team has advanced to a state title game — in any sport — according to CHSAANow.com’ online database."
