APS Welcomes and Supports Multilingual Families

In Aurora Public Schools, we believe diversity is our strength. It is a top priority – and an honor – to support our multilingual families through engagement, translation and interpretation services. In APS, our families collectively speak more than 160 languages. We know parents and guardians, regardless of which language they speak, want the best for their students.

The APS Welcome Center works with multilingual families who are new to the district to help them get the support they need. The center’s team of family liaisons speak 12 languages combined and serve as a valuable resource to families who are becoming accustomed to our school system. The liaisons host family engagement events, parent workshops, summer camps and more to build positive relationships with newcomers. They mentor students and advocate for their social and academic success.

Another way APS is supporting families is by providing translation and interpretation services. APS established a Central Language Services Office in 2018. The CLSO ensures families have access to numerous resources, including school and district communications, in our top 10 languages. From Amharic to Burmese, Nepali and more, the CLSO strives to eliminate language barriers across APS. To equitably support all multilingual families, the CLSO partners with outside agencies and freelance interpreters when needed.

The CLSO also provides helpful tools for families to communicate with their schools and district departments in their home languages. One tool, TalkingPoints, is being widely utilized across the district. This two-way communication platform empowered APS staff and families to send and respond to more than 1.4 million messages in 100+ languages during the 2020-21 school year!

School and district staff also have access to a budget-friendly and efficient phone interpretation system that allows them to assist multilingual families when on-site interpreters are not available. The system provides support in more than 350 languages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

One of the core beliefs in our APS 2026: Faces of the Future strategic plan is that families are our partners in education. To our past and present families, we say thank you, gracias, merci, ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါတယ်, धन्यवाद, and mahadsanid for helping every student shape a successful future.
