What is Google Meet?

Google Meet is the video-conferencing app that you use with students. Use it for your morning meetings, to deliver synchronous instruction, or to meet with small groups/one-on-one with students. FYI- Google Meet is constantly upgrading at this time, so as soon as new features are released we will do our best to update this site. Thanks for your patience!

What is Google Chat?

Google Chat is for chat communication with students in our aurorak12 domain. Students can chat with other students and their teachers. Chat is an intelligent and secure communications tool, built for teams. From direct messages to team chat rooms, Chat makes team communication easy and efficient.

Troubleshooting Tips

  1. Students can't enter a Meet

    • Try adding the student back to the Meet by clicking the people icon in the upper right-hand corner, then selecting "Add People" to add the student back in.

    • If a student can't get back in after you have added them, it is possible they are not signed into their aurorak12.org account OR that there are multiple sign-ons active (if using a home device) Have student sign out of all accounts, then sign back in with ONLY their aurork12.org account

  2. Many students suddenly can't enter a Meet

    • Try resetting your Google Classroom Meet link: Go to Settings in Google Classroom, scroll down to the Meet area in Settings, click on link and choose "reset."

  3. Glitching, Freezing, Bad Audio/Video

    • This is often the result of a bandwidth problem wherever it is happening. However, there are things that can be done to make the most of whatever bandwidth you have:

      1. Close all unnecessary tabs before entering a Meet

      2. Reset your Chrome browser - see how here: https://youtu.be/NgGO0t852dY

    • If problems persist after trying #1 & 2 above:

      1. Leave Meet and come back in

      2. Sign out of your chromebook/restart your laptop and re-enter the Meet

      3. Check your wifi speed at speedtest.net - most internet providers supply 20 MBps download at a minimum. If your speed is below that, contact your service provider

      4. Unplug your internet router, wait 20 seconds to plug back in. NOTE: it usually takes wifi 5 - 10 minutes to come back up after a restart like this.

  4. Gridview Extension

    • We totally understand your desire to see all of your students at once. We are hoping for a speedy arrival for the 7 x 7 Grid from Google. The Gridview extension (even the "fix") causes many problems and "hogs" a lot of a Chromebook's resources. It behaves erratically, sometimes working, sometimes not. When it's not working, you often have no other option than to leave the Meet and come back in to adjust your view. We recommend uninstalling it.

  5. Students getting "kicked out" of Meets (not removed by moderator)

    • We haven't been able to re-create this issue and suspect wifi issues or (more than likely), the student clicked on a link while on the Meet tab and that link opened in the same tab instead of a new tab. For instance, if you are in a Meet and click on your bookmark for gmail, gmail will open in the same tab, "kicking" you out of the Meet.

  6. Teachers not having use of moderation controls even when using a Google Classroom Meet link

    • We haven't been able to re-create this issue, but after speaking with our Google liason, think the issue could be a Meet extension. One that is particularly troublesome is the Meets Attendance link. We pulled it back in late August when it interfered with the first wave of moderation controls. However, that doesn't preclude an individual from installing it themselves. Disable Meet extensions to see if the problem resolves.

  7. Students are on meets by themselves, or "making a meet link"

    • They most likely got a hold of an old meet link that is not secure and they are using it to talk. If you can capture the url of the meet link we can have it shut down. They currently cannot make any new meet links.

  8. Keep meet links secure
