Aurora Public Schools recently celebrated the grand opening of two new P-8 schools as part of Blueprint APS, the district’s long-term facilities and educational plan. The plan provides students with the necessary resources, schools and learning opportunities to meet the challenges of the future.

Del Mar Academy was built on the site of the former Lyn Knoll Elementary School campus and is located in one of the most historic neighborhoods in Western Aurora. The new school features an expansive three-story building with state-of-the-art science classrooms, a STEM lab and an art room.

“During the first month of school, I discovered a love for STEM,” said Del Mar Academy sixth-grade student Malik Blandin. “Our STEM, music and art classrooms are all really cool and it’s so much fun to learn in those new spaces.”

The new school opened as a P-6 (preschool through sixth grade) for the 2023-24 school year and has around 650 students. It will add a grade level next year and the year after, ultimately serving students in preschool through eighth grade. The new school serves students who would have attended the now-closed Lyn Knoll Elementary School, Sixth Avenue Elementary School or South Middle School.

In Northeastern Aurora, Aurora Highlands P-8 is the first of four schools in The Aurora Highlands’ 4,000-acre master-planned community. The school currently serves about 300 students in its inaugural year and adds more students to its school community every week. The school has a capacity to serve around 1,000 students in preschool through eighth grade and features state-of-the-art classrooms and technology.

“Over the past month, I’ve experienced remarkable personal growth and self-discovery here at Aurora Highlands P-8,” said Aurora Highlands P-8 seventh-grade student Rose Vazquez Montoya. “It’s incredible how this environment has allowed me to grow, not just academically, but also as a person.”

Construction of both schools began in February 2022 and was funded through APS’ 2016 Bond Program, a $300 million measure that voters approved in November 2016.
