Biography of Michael Giles, Jr.

Michael Giles, Jr. serves as the 17th superintendent of Aurora Public Schools after joining the school district in July 2023. Aurora had already been home to Mr. Giles and his family for 25 years and he is thrilled to seize the opportunity to lead the school district in its next chapter.

Prior to joining Aurora Public Schools, Mr. Giles served in the Cherry Creek School District for over 20 years. He was the Assistant Superintendent of Equity, Culture and Community Engagement as well as the Assistant Superintendent of Performance Improvement. He also served as a school counselor, dean of students, assistant principal, principal and Executive Director. Prior to working in public education, Mr. Giles worked for a juvenile correction center. He is committed to building a public education system that engages every student’s unique strengths regardless of their background and that challenges educators to think differently about teaching and learning.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology from Colorado Mesa University and his master's degree in educational counseling from the University of Phoenix.

Mr. Giles was born in Queens, New York. His father served in the military, so his family moved many times throughout his childhood. He lived in South Carolina, Georgia and England before eventually moving to Colorado Springs. Mr. Giles graduated from Falcon High School and admits that his path in life has never been simple or straightforward. As such, he identifies with the challenges that many Aurora Public Schools students face. He also hopes that his story shows that unexpected changes can turn new dreams into reality.
