East Middle School

Big changes are coming to East Middle School! Renovations and new construction will provide a whole new look to the building.

Funding for the project will come from both bond and grant dollars. In 2019, Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) awarded APS a $17 million dollar grant. BEST requires that school districts provide a match for project costs. APS is providing a 60 percent match or about $26.5 million in funds toward construction.

Through the use of grant and bond funding, East will receive a partial new school building and interior remodeling to many portions of the existing building. The new portion of the school will be a large, two-story structure that will include new classrooms, a cafeteria, library and space for elective programs and administrative offices. The school's existing art wing, gym building and auditorium will receive remodeling throughout, which will provide aesthetic updates and improve portions of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing inside the school.

Construction begins this fall and the two-story addition will be ready for students during the 2021-22 school year. The remaining remodeling work is expected to be completed during summer break the following year.

These improvements will not only update the flow and functionality throughout the building, but will benefit many of the school's academic programs. Students and staff members are excited to attend school on the updated site.

We are grateful to BEST and the citizens of Aurora who approved a $300 million bond measure in November 2016, which is allowing us to update our building and improve our learning spaces.
