As the 2023-24 school year draws to a close, Aurora Public Schools (APS) celebrates and bids a heartfelt farewell to over 90 remarkable individuals whose dedication and passion have left an indelible mark on our community. This group collectively served APS for over 600 years! Below, we honor two retirees whose years of service, like many others, had a profound impact on countless lives.
Lisa Birdsong: A Legacy of Commitment and Care
For 36 years, Lisa Birdsong has been a cornerstone of Hinkley High School. The devoted counselor’s spirit of perseverance can be summed up by the sign on her office door, which reads, "Graduating is not an option." Her commitment has been unwavering, often reminding her students of their potential during their most challenging times.
"I am looking forward to new adventures, but I love my job and my kids. I will miss coming to work every day," Lisa reflects. She finds joy interacting with students, especially in their moments of realization and growth. "I love the moment when the light bulb comes on and they realize they are capable of anything they set their mind to."
Lisa's most cherished moments include graduation ceremonies. "Seeing the kids walk across the stage is something that I am always proud of," she said. As she steps into retirement, Lisa plans to catch up on housework and embrace new adventures. "I'm going to go where the universe takes me.”
Kimberly Pippenger: A Journey of Growth and Service
Kimberly Pippenger, beloved Principal of Virginia Court Elementary School, retires with 23 years of dedicated service in APS. Starting as a young teacher, Kimberly quickly realized that APS was where she could thrive. "It was very clear to me that APS is a place where I could learn and grow as someone starting their career in education," she recalls. Her journey from teacher to principal was marked by continuous learning and leadership opportunities.
Kimberly's tenure has been defined by her deep connection with her “people” and the community. "I feel so honored that families share their stories with us and welcome us into their lives," she says. "Connection is everything. It is such a resilience-building activity. Make sure to have your people."
Reflecting on her career, Kimberly shares the essence of her motivation. "If you think you are here to be a savior, the community does not need a savior and you will burn out. I realized leaning into service really gave me purpose." Looking ahead, Kimberly plans to rest, reset and explore new opportunities. "Be open and say yes. I’ll be ready for whatever comes next."
