Aurora Public Schools’ commitment to recognizing and engaging all students with their unique abilities was on full display this week.

APS and Special Olympics Colorado signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes APS as a Unified Distinguished District. This means APS is recognized for its significant support of students with disabilities and will receive ongoing support from Special Olympics. APS is just the third district in Colorado to receive this prestigious designation.

The MOU signing happened during the district's second annual Unified basketball tournament at FieldhouseUSA inside the Town Center at Aurora. A total of 17 middle and high school teams competed.

APS has partnered with Special Olympics Colorado to bring Unified Programs to the district. Unified Programs bring students with disabilities (athletes) and students without disabilities (Unified partners) together to build relationships, teamwork and sportsmanship.

In addition to basketball, APS middle and high school Unified teams compete in track and field, soccer and swimming. APS high schools also compete in Unified bowling.
