Mission Complete: APS Fifth Graders Build Simulated Mars Habitats
Posted on 12/14/2023

Buckley Space Force Base was recently invaded by Martians when hundreds of Harmony, Mosley, Murphy Creek and Quest fifth-grade students linked up to participate in the Mission to Mars event!

Months before stepping foot into their simulated Mars colonizations, the students prepared for life on the Red Planet by engaging in teamwork and problem-solving classroom activities, designing mission patches, writing sagas, building life support systems, collaborating on uniforms and more.

During the Mission to Mars event, each crew constructed a habitat for the surface of Mars, ate lunch inside their habitat, linked their habitat to others and explored the Mars full colony they helped create.

The simulated manned mission to Mars was a memorable experience that provided a unique hands-on opportunity for students to be actively involved in an innovative application of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

We thank Buckley SFB for their continued partnership and Air & Space STEM Outreach for providing our teaching with the training, resource materials, volunteers, Martian habitat plastic and logistics coordination necessary to make this event a success.
